The games your child already loves at school don't need replacing. They need one rule removed.
Traffic Lights, some version of Gates, Sharks and Minnows, most children arrive at football already knowing a handful of games like these from playtime. Rather than teaching something new, it's usually quicker to take the game they already know and quietly fix the one part of it that tends to leave someone standing on the sidelines feeling bad.
Three games, one fix each
Instead of "out" on red, make red mean an exaggerated wobbly freeze, arms out, one leg up, whatever's silliest. Everyone's still moving, still playing, and getting caught on red becomes the funny bit rather than the losing bit. If your child is playing on their own, the solo traffic light dribbling game uses the same colours for close control.
We built a proper never-out gate game called Treasure Gates, where missing a gate just means you follow the ball to whichever gate is now closest, rather than losing a turn. Have a go at Treasure Gates to see the shape of it, then use the same idea (wide gates, no penalty for missing, follow the ball) on your own game of Gates in the garden.
Normally getting caught means you're out or you become a shark yourself, which can turn into an ever-growing group of eliminated children standing around. Try a "helper shark" version instead: getting caught means you join the shark for one round doing something fun before rejoining as a minnow. Nobody's stuck on the sidelines.
The common thread
The common thread across all three is the same one running through this whole site: keep the game the same shape, but make sure a mistake changes what happens next rather than ending someone's turn. Once you start looking for it, you'll spot the "you're out" moment in almost every playground game, and it's usually a small edit away from being fixed.
Why the fix matters
The framework behind this thinking, sometimes called LET US Play in the research world (Brazendale et al., 2015), points to the same idea: fewer stoppages, fewer eliminations, more room to move, and both activity and enjoyment go up.
